Let’s give Enbridge a warm welcome!
Posted Jan 8
The “public hearings” for the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline roll into BC’s biggest cities this month, and we want to be sure concerned citizens in Vancouver, Victoria, and Kelowna are able to actually tell them what they think about their ludicrous project.
Because the public is - for the first time in the Federal government’s Joint Review Panel process so far - barred from attending the actual hearings, we think it’s critical that people who didn’t already register to formally present to the panel have a chance to be heard.
Here are four ways you can get involved this month:
- Hope the Whale - in Vancouver starting on Jan 14, share your messages of hope for an oil-free coast on this artist-created 25-foot whale. Stories will be captured in-person and via social media. Location TBD: see our Hope action page for updates
- Leaked: Stories from Oil Spills Event - Hear first-hand stories from speakers who experienced devastating oil spills in their communities. Featuring Michelle Barlond-Smith (Kalamazoo, MI), Melina Laboucan-Massimo (Lubicon Cree, AB). Songs by Ta’Kaiya Blaney. 7PM, Jan 31. Heritage Hall (3102 Main St, Vancouver.
- Knock the Vote - Help make oil tankers a vote-determining issue by going door-knocking in a battleground provincial electoral district. RSVP for the Vancouver event here
- Share on social media - the best way to amplify the voices of BC citizens standing up for our coast is to share their stories, and the real world actions above, with your networks on social media. Let’s keep the buzz high and make sure everyone knows Enbridge is in town and that everyone wants them to go away. Check out Pipe Up Against Enbridge on Facebook for graphics, stories, news to spread.
If you are one of the over 4,000 courageous citizens who previously registered to present to the JRP, here are some resources we’ve created with some of our allies to help you prepare your oral presentation.
With many national news commentators pegging the Enbridge pipeline "dead", and the controversy as one of the top news stories of 2012, it's important we don't now lean back and assume our work is done. The forces lined up behind this have literally billions of dollars backing their success. What we have is people-power, a deeply held love for our land and coast, and the beautiful creative expression that happens when citizens and communities self-organize and fight for something deeply meaningful to them.
We hope to see you on the streets and online this month!
